Stopped in for a quick pint. Lovely wee friendly pub. Must come back for food one evening!

We stopped into Johnshaven after a day out up the coast at Dunottar and were delighted to find The Anchor. There was a great choice available for seafood lovers, vegetarians and the kids alike. Service was spot on, the food was delicious and the bar/restaurant had a lovely modern, cosy vibe to it. Would heartily recommend

Was there for a meal only. Great food, fish pie was tasty, onion rings were one of the best, light batter, delicious. Pasta with lobster from specials board was really good. There was a few annoying flies so we kept waving and protecting our food The service has room for improvement. We came in and were standing at the door for ages waiting for someone’s attention, a few staff member passed by and nobody asked anything even though the place was still empty as we booked an early slot.

Before you panic over the dramatic one-star reviews, take a deep breath. The Anchor is a cracking place to eat and stay. It’s not a luxury spa retreat with marble bathrooms and bedding stuffed with ethically sourced angel feathers. It’s a simple, traditional spot. And that’s exactly the point. If you want somewhere comfortable, clean, and properly welcoming in Johnshaven, this is it. Yes, like most places in and around Johnshaven, they don’t serve food on Mondays and Tuesdays. This is not a personal attack. It’s just how things work locally. On those days, hop in the car and explore another nearby restaurant. Consider it part of the adventure. The bar has a great atmosphere, the food is fresh, and the portions won’t leave you staring sadly at an empty plate. And as for the horror of being asked whether you’ve made a booking, imagine that. A restaurant reserving tables. The scandal. They’re just trying to keep things running smoothly. A little politeness works wonders. Huge thanks to Gary and the team for making the whole stay relaxed, easy, and genuinely memorable. Would happily come back. Maybe even book a table in advance.

Great fish and chips! This place was recommended by a friend and did not disappoint. Everything was great, friendly staff and good prices.

I didn’t stay there. We just went for food. What a lovely pub/restaurant this is. The food was excellent and the staff really friendly.

Decent food, could be better. We ordered a variety of foods. The burgers were a bit dry and could be fresher. The sea bass was very good. For starter we had a mixed sharing platter (I forget the menu item name) , mostly fried food but was okay. Good drink selection and although service was a bit slow staff were all very friendly and accommodating

Stopped in here twice for food while staying in Johnshaven and the food is wow, wow, wow. Little expensive but backed up by taste so fair enough. Service was also very friendly and very fast. Unsurprisingly lots of seafood on the menu given the location. First time round I had a beef in peppered sauce thing which was on their specials and delicious. Second day we had the festive menu and the turkey roulade was outstanding. Even the gravy was elevated to absolute perfection. It’s the only place to eat out in town, but fortunately it’s absolutely banging. Highly recommend. Some other notes that people might find useful: 1. It’s dog friendly 2. It does takeaway 3. It can get busy at the weekend so remember and book a table
